Sundream

Inspired by the hot summer of 1976 and set in Jaywick, Essex. Sundream follows Jackie, a no-nonsense 60-something who remembers the glorious long hot summer of 1976 and her teenage romance growing up in Jaywick. 50 years later, during another long hot summer she finds herself peculiarly interested in newly arrived eccentric Dave, who takes ‘seeing the bright side of life’ to new extremes. But how will the extreme temperatures impact them, their relationship and the future of their community? Sundream was created through, extensive community outreach during the heatwave in summer 2025 and responds directly to what the local community on the Tendring coast (Clacton & Jaywick) want to see. With a sold out work-in-progress performance at Jaywick Martello Tower in September 2025. The evening also featured work from local writers and an exhibition on the research about extreme heat that had informed the play. Initial development took place summer 2025 in partnership with CVST, Jaywick Martello Tower, Jaywick Community and Resource Centre, Clacton and District Local History Society and was made possible through support from the grassroots creative community in Tendring. It was funded by Essex County Council's Arts and Cultural Fund and FSJ Charities.
