A new play set in Jaywick
Written by Molly Anne Sweeney
Directed by Sofia Bagge

Free work-in-progress performance at Jaywick Martello Tower
13th Sep 5:30pm

The play follows Jackie, a no-nonsense 60-something who remembers the glorious long hot summer of 1976 and her teenage romance growing up in Jaywick. During another long hot summer in 2026, she finds herself peculiarly interested in newly arrived eccentric Dave, who takes ‘seeing the bright side of life’ to new extremes. Will she capture the spirit of her youth and triumph over cynicism? Will she finally learn to walk in platform shoes? Will she ever get ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart’ out of her head

Call Out for Writers - Open

We welcome writers local to Tendring to submit their monologues to our open call out. 2 of these are to be performed alongside Wise Ram Theatre's new play on 13th September at Jaywick Martello Tower, in a double bill.

About Sundream: A Summer of Creativity

We are thrilled to run our new project Sundream: A Summer of Creativity in Jaywick and Clacton this summer.

What is Sundream?

Sundream is a programme of free creative activities taking place in Jaywick and Clacton throughout the summer of 2025 exploring the local coast’s past, present and future and what it’s like to live here.

Who's it for?
The workshops and activities are for anyone who wants to connect with others, learn a new skill or just get creative.

A new original play

All of these activities will lead to Wise Ram Theatre creating a brand new original play, set in Jaywick taking place during a scorching hot summer. The play will be performed at Jaywick Martello Tower at a Celebration Event Saturday 13th September for the very first time. The celebration event will also feature 2 local writers' new monologues, performed by professional actors. So if you want to have the chance of having your very own monologue performed by professional actors, sign up to our short monologue writing course here.

What will the play you’re making be like?

Ah! Good question. When we started making it at the beginning of this process we didn't know.

All we know is that it will be set during a heatwave, take place in Jaywick and a large whale will wash up on the beach. But we didn't know who the characters were, what would happen OR what genre it would be.

What's you're favourite type of story or genre?

Through outreach activities with CVS Tendring, Sunspot in Jaywick and free creative activities delivered during the summer, we asked people who live and work around Clacton and Jaywick this question.

The most popular genre was comedy, with romance and historical in second and third place.

Once we knew this we set out to create a romantic comedy, set during the heatwave on 1976 and one in 2026.
